Abstract: In order to investigate the heavy metal contamination of Nanjing's roadside topsoil, 1 500 monitoring points were placed in five function areas of Nanjing, and the contents of heavy metal(Cr, Cd, Ni, Pb, Zn)were measured for evaluation and correlation analysis. The results indicated the concentrations of heavy metals varied within the five urban function areas(UFAs). According to the environmental background of Nanjing soil, the single factor index was employed to evaluate synthetically the pollution level among UFAs. All UFAs were heavily polluted by Cd and slightly polluted by Cr and Zn. Scenic area(SA)sites had no Zn pollution and all UFAs had no Ni pollution. Transportation junction area(TJA), industry area(IA)and education and residential area(ERA)were polluted slightly by Pb while business area(BA)and scenic area(SA)contained no Pb pollution. The descending order of the Nemerow pollution index and potential ecological risk index in UFAs are TJA>IA>ERA>BA>SA. The integrated pollution of the UFAs were all severe, while the ecological risk of Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn were all slight. The degree of Cd was extremely strong. The degree of correlation analysis from 5 kinds of heavy metals varied significantly among UFAs, suggesting that the sources of heavy metal pollution are different.
