Abstract: This paper summarized various researches on the classification and degree classification of Karst rocky desertification, and then discussed the most representative viewpoints and methods separately. Three determination conditions were analyzed based on a series of typical viewpoints. This paper suggested that scale should be a prerequisite for rocky desertification evaluation. Landscape index was not the sufficient condition to degree classification but the necessary condition. Classification according to causes and external features were both essential to rocky desertification,as long as they complement each other we would form a complete classification system. There were inherent logical relationships among karst rocky desertification concept, scale, classification and degree classification. Grading followed up classification, and this was the correct order for rocky desertification evaluation. According to lithology, land use types and the degree of karst rocky desertification, it comed up with a new proposal of classification which was a three layers classification system: “internal cause+external causes+status”.
