Abstract: In order to optimize pruning techniques of Taxus chinensis var. mairei. The 13-year-old plantation in Fujian Province was taken as test objects for conducting the pruning tests. The influence of the pruning wood tree height, DBH and pruning intensity on the growth and stem forming characteristics of the trees after two years were analyzed. The results showed that the role of pruning on the single volume and breast height form factor indexes of the tested trees increased with the time extending. The pruning wood tree height, DBH and pruning intensity exert significant effect on the growth and stem forming characteristics of the trees after pruning for two years,it is necessary to select target trees and optimize the pruning intensity. The 31 T. chinensis var. mairei pruning individual trees were cluster analyzed according to the comprehensive score of growth and form traits of two years after pruning by principal component cluster analysis method. The results could determine the optimal pruning individual trees group, estimate the optimal group general parameter, and accurate optimum target trees pruning techniques. The reasonable target trees pruning intensity of T. chinensis var. mairei were 0.272 9-0.319 1 for relatively high, the target tree requirements were 501.55-527.45 cm for tree height, and 11.93-13.56 cm for DBH with a 99% confidence interval, which provided theoretical basis for the cultivation of T. chinensis var. mairei.
