Abstract: Based on a survey in different stand types of water conservation forest, and a comprehensive consideration of forest structure, site condition, succession update potential and others factors, we evaluated and sorted ten indexes affecting stand quality by using the analytic hierarchy process in Longkou Forest Farm of Danjiangkou reservoir area, Hubei province, China. Our results showed that:(1)Forest structure was the most important factor affecting the stand quality, whereas canopy density, stand density, soil thickness and litter depth were the key factors for stand quality.(2)The stand quality of the water conservation forest ranked on modest and poor quality level in Longkou Forest Farm of Danjiangkou reservoir area. Therefore, we believed that there was a large space for improving the regional stand quality and ecological protective functions though the stand modification.(3)The result of stand quality evaluation by analytic hierarchy process coincided with the actual situation, so this method could objectively reflect the quality of the stand development condition.
