Abstract: Physiological characteristics of seven Ilexs were investigated under artificial simulation of benzene gas stress, in order to unveil the possible mechanisms of them in response to benzene stress. The results showed that membrane permeability, chlorophyll a/b, content of the lipid peroxidation product(malondialdehyde, MDA), content of proline increased, the content of soluble sugar decreased with the extension of the stress time. Meanwhile, SOD activity and POD activity present a downward trend after rising first. The order of benzene tolerance of seven tested Ilexs decreased was: I.meserveae ‘blue girl’, I.dabeishannensis,I.crenata,I. bioritsensis,I. alt ‘golden gem’,I. chinensis.
