Abstract: Pollen viability, storage method, crossing incompatibilities and young embryo culture were investigated for four Hibiscus species, e.g. H. mutabilis f. mutabilis, H. syriacus var. syriacus, H. rosa-sinensis var. rosa-sinensis, and H. roses-sinensis var. rubro-plenus, so as to provide the basis in the cultivation of new varieties of Hibiscus. The results were shown as follows: ① The pollen germination rate of all four species was relatively high. It could be arranged as: H. mutabilis f. mutabilis 88.3%, H. roses-sinensis var. rubro-plenus 82.5%, H. rosa-sinensis var. rosa-sinensis 77.8%, H. syriacus var. syriacus 76.1%; ② The pollen was not appropriate to storage at room temperature and 4 ℃, and the longest storage time was 2 d; ③ The cross incompatibilities between Hibiscus species was low and the seed setting rate was 12% for H. mutabilis f. mutabilis ×H. roses-sinensis var. rubro-plenus, 8% for H. mutabilis f. mutabilis ×H. rosa-sinensis var. rosa-sinensis, and 3% for H. mutabilis f. mutabilis ×H. syriacus var. syriacus; ④ the appropriate medium of young embryo of H. mutabilis f. mutabilis ×H. rosa-sinensis var. rosa-sinensis in vitro culture was WPM+IBA 1.0 mg/L+BA 0.1 mg/L, the germination rate was 56.6%.
