Abstract: To explore the structure characteristics of dominant tree species population during forest succession process of Xinglong Mountain and provide a scientific basis for the close-to-nature management of natural secondary forest and artificial pure forest in this region, by using the methods of spatial series representing temporal series, the dynamic law on composition, DBH and height class distribution of dominant tree species, and density of stand & dominant tree species about Populus davidiana-Betula platyphylla-Picea wilosonii forest during different secondary succession stages in Xinglong mountain were studied. The results showed that:① With positive succession of forest community, the important values of positive species, such as P. davidiana and B.platyphylla were gradually decreasing, and these species were withdrawing from the forest community gradually; however, the important value of negative species P. wilosonii was increasing, and it would be the dominant tree species and constructive species.② DBH and tree height showed a trend of increasing; and the class distributions of DBH and height about forest community and dominant tree species were various and complex in different succession stages. ③ The densities of stand and P. wilosonii increased in early stage but decreased in latter period, whereas the densities of P. davidiana and B. platyphylla were gradually decreasing. ④ The mortality numbers of stand and P. wilosonii increased in early stage but decreased in latter period, whereas the numbers of P. davidiana and B. platyphylla were gradually decreasing; Numbers of seedings and saplings for P. wilosonii first increased then decreased. The research showed community of P. davidiana-B. platyphylla-P. wilosonii forest would gradually evolve to be pure P. wilosonii forest in Xinglong mountain.
