Abstract: To explore the responses of Carpinus turczaniowii to salt stress and its salt tolerance, we studied the growth, physiological and biochemical changes of two year old C. turczaninowii seedlings stressed with six gradients of NaCl concentration(0,1,2,3,4,5 g/L). The results showed: ① The growth of C. turczaninowii was inhibited by salt stress, because the height growth, diameter growth, dry weight and relative water content of seedlings decreased with the increase of NaCl concentration. ②The protective enzymes(SOD and POD)activity, soluble sugar content and soluble protein content was increased first and then decreased; ③With the increase of salt stress, MDA content, relative conductivity and proline content increased, and reached a maximum under 5 g/L NaCl. We concluded that C. turczaninowii seedings can grow under low and moderate NaCl concentration(1-3 g/L), but its growth was inhibited under 4-5 g/L NaCl. It indicated that C. turczaninowii seedlings has certain ability of salt tolerance, and they can be used widely in the landscape.
