Abstract: Pretreated by ammonia cold plasma, rice straw/high density polyethylene composites(RPC)with ammonium polyphosphate(APP)were prepared. The treatment power(100, 200 and 300 W)and time(1, 2 and 3 min)were carried out to investigate the effects on flame retard and mechanical properties of RPC. Results of limited oxygen index(LOI)showed that, RPC with APP pretreated by ammonia cold plasma exhibited higher LOI compared with the control sample. At a treatment power of 100 W for 3 min, the LOI of RPC with APP pretreated by ammonia cold plasma was 30.5%, increased by 10.9%. The results of the mechanical properties of RPC and two-way ANOVA analysis indicated that RPC with APP pretreated by ammonia cold plasma exerted no significant effect on the tensile properties and impact strength. The treatment power of ammonia cold plasma exerted a significant effect on the flexural strength of RPC.
