Identification of superior provenances of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia Lanceolata (Lamb) Hook) and verification of their genetic superiority are most important in the work of genetic improvement of this species. Our study on this subject started in 1974, and was completed in 1979.Preliminary results of our study on genetic superiority showed that phenotypic differences in five-year growth between 11 provenances attained significance at the one (or five) percent level.At the provenance level variations between provenances usually showed some coherent patterns based on provenance x site adaptation clines which can form the basis of provenance transfer model.According to the results of these experiments, in the natural regions of Chinese fir, these provenances can be divided into three breeding zones, i. e, "central", "genes ral" and "border".Results of analysis of variance showed that the genotypes from subpopulations in the center of the zone were more stable than those from subpopulations at the edges and that the development of the provenance transfer models of Chinese fir was entirely applicable to native species. Therefore, establishment of a seed orchard of "plus" trees from native species is considered advisable.
