Abstract

This new furfural refining process consists of: (1) neutralizing condensate in the decanter, (2) rectifying crude furfural in a batch packed column with Sulzer packing type CY under vacuum and, (3) gathering the rectified residues and the lean layer of the overhead distillate individually for recovering furfural from them. The condensate from the top of the distillation column is neutralized in the decanter with 1-2% NaOH solution to make the pH value of the lean layer recycling to the column in the range of 6.5-7 in order to control the pH value of crude furfural to 6 or more, and then the crude furfural is sent for vacuum rectification. This new furfural refining process gives high yields of superior quality.
