Abstract: In recent years, there have existed some viewpoints on whether it is proper to keep the old technology in sawmills (with narrow and long workshops) or to adopt the new technology (with wide and short workshops). In some sawmills, however, the old technology has given way to the new, but soms problems in technical lay-outs still remain unsolved. In dealing with this vital question of lumbering, one must be clear about the essential difference between these two kinds of technology and proper analyses on principal technical-economic quotas must be made. Based on the specific conditions in this country, e. g., the technical conditions of logs and lumber, the peculiarities in equipment, the principal technical-economic quotas, etc., advantages and disadvantages of the old and the new technology have been analyzed in this paper, which maintains that the new technology should be adopted in designing new and rebuilding old sawmills and in improving lumbering techniques.
