Proper tropical forests on Hainan Island are very important in maintaining ecological equilibrium. Irraiional exploitation of tropical forests has made the ecological environment deteriorate. In order to improve ecological conditions, shelterbelts of trees should be built on the coasts, plantations should be grown on hills and tablelands, and the moun ainous tropical grass ands should be turned into tropical forests. Rubber plantations should be built into a complex forest system, which will not only produce rubber and timber, but can improve the ecological environment as well. Exploitation of forest resources must be well coordinated with their preservation, reconstruction and rejuvenation, which is indispensable to the ecological equilibrium on Hainan Island.
