Abstract

A double-compartment kiln described in this paper is a finalized design for wood drying Workshop section. It is lined with reinforced concrete effectively resistant to corrosion, weathering and cracking. The kiln has a set of doors: an in-door and an out-door, made of metal and thermal insulation material. The doors are easy to open and close. Besides, a swellable, air-tight washer is attached to ensure no leakage at the top and on either side of each door. Equipment for determining moisture contents and an observation window are also devised to monitor the varying moisture contents in the test lumber and observe whether there are any cracks at the end of the board at any time. This type of kiln can be used for conventional drying, high temperature drying, and superheated steam drying. It functions satisfactorily with low cost of energy.
