Abstract

Platycarya strobilacea is a species widely distributed in China. This paper deals with some of its physical and mechanical properties, and the 5 boles experimented on were collected from Zhejiang province. The properties studied are specific gravity, width of growth rings, shrink and swell of wood, compressive strength parallel and perpendicular to the grain, tensils strength perpendicular to the grain, bending strength, shear strength parallel to the grain, toughness, hardness and some others. The mean value and standard deviation on each of the properties are given. Also given are the regression equations for various degrees of strength with respect to specific gravities. It has been analysed that the specific gravity of wood affects water sorption in the waterlogged condition.
