Abstract: Burning off, a measure of forest management, has been adopted broadly in the southern forest-region of China for clearing slash. This paper has studied the effect of burning off on the physical and chemical characteristics of soil. The slash pile height and weight were treated as four levels which were arranged at the different slope positions by randomized complete-block design. With the multi-functional variance test, it has been revealed that the capillary porosity, bulk density, organic matter, total nitrogen, available nutrients, C / N, pH, hydrolytic acid, exchangeable cation capacity, total base and base saturation were changed by burning off.
