Abstract: How to protect plants ecologically, compatibly and sustainably is the most concerned issue in the 21st century.Chemical ecology of insect is the theoretical basis of pest control, and the most effective method of pest control sustainably is to carry out plant immune engineering. The plant protectants, repelling insect pest away from the plant, deterring the oviposition of adults and the continuation of feeding, would protect the plants against the pests. The recent advances in chemical interactions among plants, insects and their natural enemies were reviewed in this paper. The roles of pheromones and plant volatiles on the host location, feeding behavior and reproduction potential of insects, and the effects of nonhost on the host selection behavior of phytophagous insects were introduced. And the application strategies of plant allelochemicals and plant protectants in insect pest management were also discussed. The prospects of application of chemical ecology of insect, such as the development of botanical pesticides or plant protectants, the control of insect behavior by using chemical stimuli, the monitoring of pest, and the management of natural enemies, were put forward. Finally, the research directions in chemical ecology of insect in the future were also suggested.
