Effects of Several Site Factors on the Growth of Chenglü Bamboo in Mountain Region of North Guizhou

Abstract: Chenglü bamboo is a hybrid of Bambusa pervariabilis McClure as female with Dendrocalamopsis daii Keng as male parent crossed by Guangxi Institute of Forestry Science twenty years ago. Several priority clones such as No.3, No.6, No.8 and No.30 had been selected. The clone No.3 was introduced to the plant in north Guizhou for pulpwood. Through a survey of 31 sample plots, the effects of 6 site factors on the diameter, height and culm number of the Chenglü bamboo were studied. The results showed that (1) The altitude, slope position, soil thickness and slopeness had the significant effects on the growth of Chenglü bamboo, but the slope aspect and soil types had not significant effects on the growth of Chenglü bamboo. (2) The forestation site should be selected below 700m (especially for the high yield bamboo forest). The sites between 700 and 800m should be selected on the depression and foot of the hills. The sites above 800m were not suitable for the growth of the bamboo. (3) The upper slope was not suitable for the growth of the bamboo, the depression, mid position and foot of the hills were all suitable for planting the bamboo. (4) The thin soil was not suitable for the growth of the bamboo, and the planting sites should be the soils with middle to thick layers, especially for the high yield of bamboo forest. (5) The purple soil and limy soil, south and north slope aspects were all suitable for the growth of the bamboo, but the growth of the bamboo were better on the purple soil and south slope.
