Abstract: The soil physical and chemical properties of riparian zone along Qinhuai River in Nanjing were studied in this paper. The soil moisture of riparian zone were higher than that of droughty zone. Bulk density, total porocity, capillary porocity and non-capillary porocity of different areas soils were evidently various. Soils of riparian zone in the upper reaches were acid, while that in middle and lower reaches were neutral or alkalescent. Organic matter(OM)change in quantity was marked. It accumulated mainly at the soil surface. There was significantly positive relation between soil total nitrogen(TN) contents and OM. The significantly positive relation was found between soil pH value and phosphorus conteuts, as well. Soil total phosphorus(TP) contents in upper reaches were less than that in lower reaches. However, there were not distinct change between different layer soils about phosphorus contents.
