Abstract: The technology of benzylation of fast-growing poplar veneer was investigated by orthogonal trials. The results showed that in the test ranges, the influence of temperature on benzylation was very obvious. The effects of mass ratio of NaOH on water was obvious while the influence of time was not significant. The optimum conditions of benzylation were as follows: benzylation temperature 120℃, benzylation time 2 hour, mass ratio of NaOH to water 15%. At this condition the percentage of weight gain of benzylated wood reached 64.9%. X - ray and DSC were used to analyze the micro structure and the thermoplastic character of the benzylated wood.
