Abstract: Acrylate composite emulsion with high resistance to ions and organic solvent were prepared by using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as protective colloid instead of emulsifier OP or sodium dodecyl sulfate etc via emulsion polymerization. The mechanical properties were improved, with stable latexes of over 50% solid content. The analysis of crosslinking degree of acrylic latexes here indicated acrylate underwent radical polymerization on the chain of CMC, yielding a hyperbranched crosslinked polymer. Monomer conversion was improved with the aid of CMC, while either too high or too low viscosity CMC was not beneficial for the polymerization.
