Urban green space functions: present, problems and future

Abstract: Urban green space is urban green infrastructure and the important urban life support system. It has important ecological and socio-economic functions. It also becomes the important standard on evaluating urban ecological sustainability and life quality. In this paper, the ecological, economic and social functions of urban green space were systematically summarized, a number of issues to be settled urgently are proposed. For example, how do the urban green spaces influence the urban development form? How will a green space ecological network be developed for the people and for the conservation of biodiversity? How will the ecological, social-economic values of green spaces be measured? How can results of these values of green spaces be incorporated into the comprehensive urban green planning? Finally, the development trend of urban green space conservation, management as well as planning in the future are pointed out, as well. A comprehensive urban green space framework is also proposed which could contribute to management and planning of urban green space future development in the Chinese cities.
