Abstract: Based on the establishment of measuring method of β sitosterol content in Cyclocarya paliurus, the effect of different temperatures on β sitosterol content in oneyear old seedlings of three C. paliurus provenances was studied in the paper. The results showed that temperature had a significant influence on the β sitosterol content in the stems of C. paliurus seedling, while no significant effects were observed in the root and leaves. The average contents of β sitosterol in stems of C. paliurus seedlings were1.50 % for 30 ℃, 0.92 % for 25 ℃ and 1.72 % for 20 ℃ respectively. There were significant differences in β sitosterol content at different tissue organs of C. paliurus. The highest content was observed in leaves, followed by stems, and the lowest was detected in roots. A significant interaction between temperatures and provenances was founded in the β sitosterol contents of C. paliurus roots and leaves. The results from this study suggested that both higher temperature and lower temperature would improve the content of βsitosterol in the roots and stems of C. paliurus seedlings, but the highest contents of leaves were achieved at 25 ℃.
