Abstract: Characteristics of AUG context (from-20to+6bp relative to the initiator AUG codon) were analyzed in 297genes of Poplar. The conservation and correlation of the initiator AUG context between high expressed genes and low expressed genes were compared. Results showed that there were strong preference for A at six positions (-1,-2,-3,-4,-5and-6) and G at+4position. The conservation of AUG context in high expressed genes was shown to be different from that of low expressed genes. The positions of-6,-3and+4were possibly related with the feature of high expression. The correlation in some special AUG context sections was possibly related with translation efficiency. The effect of the content of GC of AUG context on AUG CAI in low expressed genes was discussed. It was seen thai there was more effectiveness of higher GC content on translation initiation efficiency in low expressed genes. The analysis was done to know the characteristics of AUG context and the relationship of gene expression in Poplar.
