Abstract: The effect of replacing latex with starch on coated paper properties was investigated .Two feasible methods were explored to increase the dosage of starch and decrease the viscosity of coating color. One method was that GCC was wrapped in gelled starch and the modified GCC was put into coating color as pigment. The other method entail was to convert the starch into a gelled condition and then add it into the coating color directly. The result indicated that using the second method not only advanced the rheology of coating color and improved coating process runnability, but also increased the ink absorption of coated paper and improved the optical and printing properties of coated paper. When the dry weight of coating starch was 60 g, and the latex was 25 g, the modified coated paper had outstanding optical and printing properties. During the printing process, it had better performance in less dusting and ink reducibility ,as well.
