Abstract: Based on 10year investigations, the growth and wood density were analyzed for 112 families of Chinese fir at the yellow mountain where one of the first national regional testing locations was located. A slight negative correlation (-0.009~-0.088) was examined between growth and wood density. So it was clear that the growth traits were independent on wood density, which made it possible to select superior families of individuals which had good properties on both growth and wood density. Thirteen families were selected when growth and wood density were taken into account, 9.8%, 7.9% and 28.9% genetic gains for height, DBH and Volume index respectively were to be obtained, and the wood density of 13 selected families was 0.5%~13.0% (3.5% on average) higher than that of the population mean.
