Abstract: We analyzed the growth and wood density of superior family of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) at 5yearold and 9yearold in Zhejiang by nationwide regional test. The results showed that the growth traits were significantly different among different seed orchard and different family at 9year old for 112 superior families from 14 seed orchard, while wood density was merely different among the different families. Genetic correlation coefficient of growth traits was high (0.746—0.985). But growth and wood density were weakly negatively correlated. We also have found there is significant genetic difference among different seed orchard, and among different families in same seed orchard by analyzing the growth of 23yearold Chinese fir forest. The seed orchards and families from Hunan, Fujian and Guizhou provinces generally perform better than trees from the other provinces. Considering family difference, we selected 22 superior families from 122 families, such as Qianjinpin 61, Minjian 53, Xiangdabaozi 30 and so on, which had practical gains of volume at 135.5 %—344.1 %, with higher wood density than average 0.0 %—18.7 %.The accuracy of superior family of Chinese fir at 23yearold selected from 5yearold and 9yearold was 31.8 % and 40.9 % respectively. The results also indicated that there were significant interaction effects in different sits and between seed orchards and sites, which suggested environment factors such as site condition would have a great effect on seedling growth of Chinese fir in this test.
