Abstract: Abstract: 【Objective】Pteroceltis tatarinowii is an economically important tree species widely used in Xuan paper industry due to the presence of high-quality fibers in its barks. Understanding the differences infiber morphology among wild P. tatarinowii populations could provide essential background for high-quality fiber resources screening. 【Method】The length, width, and ratio of length to width of fiber cells were measured and compared among nineteen wild P. tatarinowii populations in Hubei Province, using the pectinase solution to separate fiber cells. 【Result】In general, the average fiber length, the average width, and the ratio of length to width among populations were 1 499.68 μm, 8.90 μm, and 168.91 respectively. Significant differences in overall fiber morphology indices were evident. Both population 18(from Santan Scenic Area)and population 1(from Five Gorge Scenic Area)were superior than that of the other populations, with the average fiber length, the average fiber width and the ratio of fiber length to width of the two populations being 2 248.46 μm, 9.82 μm, and 237.65 respectively. 【Conclusion】The fiber of wild P. tatarinowii populations in Hubei Province is a suitable raw material for producing Xuan paper, and the populations from Santan Scenic Area and Five Gorge Scenic Area could be utilized as potential high-quality fiber resources.
