A PRELIMINARY APPROACH TO LANDSCAPE RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AND VISUAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT IN CHINA

Abstract: Landscape resources, as not only the natural physical but the natural aesthetic resource, should be inventroied, classified and filed in a systematic and scientific way and should be managed with national legal measurements and professional methodologies in China. In this paper, a landscape resources management and visual impact assessment model which may be used in our country at pre-sent situation, is tentatively put forward and then the landscape comprehensive visual qualities evaluation , on which the existing landscape resources management objectives and measurements depend, is discussed, including the scenic quality relating to some aesthetic attributions, the sensitivity level which is the degree of viewer’ s concern on and visibility of landscape, and the visual absorption capability which indicates the intrinsic physical characteristics of landscape to screen and absorb the impact of proposal projects. Also, landscape visual impact assessment method and process which consist of ex-isting landscape inventory, proposed project simulations and impact assessment are discussed. Finally, the author points out that there is a great need for the aesthetic resources management and visual impact assessment in terms of existing and potential visual blight caused by the rapid development in Chi-
