Abstract: The early-late correlation and early selection of the growth traits of Pinus massoniana were studied through stem-analysis of the dominant or codominant trees in four masson pine stands on Xipi Forest Farm in Huaan county, Fujian province. The result showed that the variation of height growth increases with age, but the variation of ameter growth declines a little after the maximum. Both the rate of increase growth variation and that of correlation coefficient reach their maximum at t age of 9 or 10. Through analysis of the growth variation, its correlation and the early selection efficiency, it is primarily decided that the age of 10 is the best age for the early selection of the natural stands of masson pine. According to the height and the square of the breast height diameter of the masson pine at the age of 10, the volume at the age of 30 could be estimated. The best age for the early selection earried out in a plantation in one year earlier than that in a natural stand.
