Abstract: Chinese fir ] is a fast growing evergreen coniferous tree species with wide distribution area (covered all the subtropical in southern China). It has very straight stems, special sweet smell, resistance to inscets and decay, easy to asexual propagation etc. Chinese fir has the evolutionary history of 70 millinon years and has been cultured for more than 2000 years in China. NF(Nanjing Forestry UniversityFujian Province) project had completed the secondary generation genetic improvement in Chinese fir. The first secondary generation seed orchard was established in 1983. 238 open pollination families from the secondary generation seed orchard in Chinese fir were collected for progeny testion in 1987. The results (8 years) showed that there was of significant genetic difference in growth traits among families. The selected families will be increased 6 % to the mean of progeny from the secondary generation seed orchard and 20 % to the potimal cline in growth.
