Abstract: In order to monitor the ecology benefit and properly evaluate, and to manage the forest resources at the Three Gorges reservoir region in western Hubei, we conducted dynamic analysis on acreage, volumes and compositions of the forest resources in this area using statistical, compution and graphical analytical tools. The results showed that the forest acreage and stand volume decreased rapidly from the mid1960s to mid1980s.Since then, the Hubei provincial government and the local forestry bureau have exerted great efforts to carry out a series of ecological protection regulations and many sustainable development projects. These measures have efficiently protected the development of forest resources in this area. The forest acreage, volume, and coverage have been all greatly improved. The average annual increasing rate of forest acreage was 1.12%, and that of the protection forest, economic forest and special forest was 3.87%, 10%, 8.40% respectively. The net reduction rate of timber area was 1.43%. Forest compositions were found to be in an increasingly appropriate structure. Forests are playing important role in maintenance the ecological and environmental safety of the Three Gorges reservoir regions.
