Abstract: In this paper, the authors have chosen five evergreen broadleaved tree species introduced to urban area of Nanjing and investigated the changes of their cold resistance indices during over wintering with infrequent icesnow weather from early ten days of January to early ten days of February, 2008. The results showed that the response to low temperatures of these species varied. The cold resistance indices of Ilex latifolia Thumb.respond slowly to low temperature. The cold resistance indices of M.maudiae Dunn respond quickly to low temperature. The cold resistance features of the other three tree species are between those of Ilex latifolia and M.maudiae Dunn. Integrated evaluating results revealed that coldresistance from strong to weak were MangLietia yuyuanensis Law and Michelia platypetala, M.maudiae Dunn and Ichelia fulgens Dandy, Ilex latifolia Thumb.. Severe icesnow disaster during over wintering may influence the changes of cold resistance and phenological characteristics of tree species.
