Abstract: To better use the Miscanthus floridulus culm as a high quality fiber-material,the fiber morphology of internode and stem node of M. floridulus culm was studied with optics microscope and multicolor image processing software system. Results showed as follows:The range of fiber in internode was from 774.99 to 5 203.33 μm in length, from 7.96 to 32.64 μm in width, and the average ratio of length to width was 121.51.The average in-diameter of fiber was 6.49 μm, and the ratio of thickness of cell-wall to in-diameter of fiber was 2.61. The fiber morphology in internode of M. flridulus was belong to longish and thick fiber rang, the length of fiber and the thickness of cell-wall was gradually decreased from the top to bottom. However, the width of fiber has no obvious regularity. The range of fiber in stem node was from 180.67 to 1 044.99 μm in length, from 10.71 to 37.96 μm in width, and the average ratio of length and width was 28.64.The average in-diameter of fiber was 5.17 μm, and the ratio of thickness of cell-wall to in-diameter of fiber was 3.10. The fiber morphology in stem node of M. flridulus was belong to very short and thick fiber rang, the length and width of fiber and the thickness of cell-wall have no obvious regularity from the top to bottom.Compare the fiber morphology of internode with the fiber morphology of stem node, the former was longer in fiber length and smaller in fiber width and the thickness of cell-wall.As a result, the fiber morphology of internode was better than the fiber morphology of stem node and was better for non-wood based panels.
