Abstract:

【Objectives】 This research aims to analyze rural landscape issues from the perspective of residents, and to provide a reference for rural landscape suitability evaluations and management decisions. 【Method】 Using Baizhang Town in Hangzhou as an example, we used a combination of semi-closed structure questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and participatory mapping to survey 468 residents on rural landscape value perceptions. SPSS correlation analysis was then used to explore correlations between demographic characteristic variables and rural landscape values, whilst PPGIS was used to identify eight rural landscape value spatial patterns and to subsequently construct sensitivity and compatibility models to further reveal spatial characteristics of the landscape. 【Result】 (1) The five demographic characteristic variables of age, income, education, occupation and residence time were correlated with several rural landscape values, whereas the gender was not correlated with rural landscape values. (2) The eight rural landscape values were spatially distributed in a patchy pattern, mainly surrounding residential villages, attractions with high cultural values, and activity concentration areas to spread outward. (3) Areas with high sensitivity values were correlated with village settlements and production areas, linked to the distribution of landscape resources, production and living needs, and environmental psychological factors. (4) The compatibility analysis identified four landscape attitude type areas, influenced by the spatial distribution of rural landscape values and the attitudes of residents. 【Conclusion】 The spatial layout of the perceived landscape values of residents was inseparable from the residents’ daily life and production activities, whilst having a certain regularity. Within the region, the mixed turnover of positive and negative landscape values also indicated the complexity of the spatial compound of multiple values on the competition for willingness to use. PPGIS can provide an effective method for revealing the spatial characteristics of the perceived values of rural landscapes from the residents’ perspective, alongside potential problems.
