Abstract: In order to improve the dimension stability and main physical mechanical properties of Pinus massoniana and make good use of it, P. massoniana lumber treated with steam, press dried and surface strengthened with modified melamine-urea formaldehyde resin (MUF) was investigated. The results showed that the MOE, MOR, and compressive strength perpendicular to grain and hardness of the surface strengthened timber were 11 294,831, 43 MPa and 2 479 N respectively, compared with the airdried timber, and the increasing percentage were 75 %, 105 %, 303 % and 90 % respectively. But the abrasive wearability of the surface strengthened timber was worse than the airdried timber. The surface density was 0445 g/cm3 and it was 16492 % bigger than that of internal. The ASE, MEE and RWA of the surface strengthened timber were 8623 %, 5118 % and 3151 %, respectively and its dimension stability was better than that of the airdried timber. So, the surface strengthening did a lot of good to the fastgrowing plantation lumber.
