Abstract: The experiment was conducted to investigate responses of growth and photosynthetic characteristics of mulberry(Morus alba L.)seedlings to neutral salt(NaCl)and alkaline salt(Na2CO3)with equivalent concentration of Na+. The results showed that effects of 100 mmol/L NaCl stress on plant growth and photosynthetic characteristics of mulberry seedling were not serious, and mulberry could adapt to NaCl stress by increasing root and shoot ratio and non-photochemical quenching(NPQ). However, whole plant and root growth of mulberry seedlings inhibited by 50 mmol/L Na2CO3 were more seriously than under NaCl stresses with equivalent concentration of Na+.Total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a contents, light utilization capability and photosynthetic rate at light saturation(Pmax)in leaves of mulberry decreased under Na2CO3 stress. But photosynthetic heat dissipation such as NPQ as inhibited which resulted in a large accumulation of excess light energy. It concluded that mulberry seedlings were injured by alkaline salt(Na2CO3)more seriously than that of by neutral salt(NaCl), Na2CO3 stress not only inhibited root growth of mulberry seedlings, but also blocked photosynthetic heat dissipation.
